Louisville Internet Resources for Low-Income Families

Why is it so important for people to have access to computers and other internet devices? According to a report commissioned by the city of Louisville, 78 percent of middle-skill jobs require digital skills, and 79 percent of people look for jobs using the internet. Therefore, it’s essential that everyone can enjoy affordable equipment, educational child care services, and free Wi-Fi — especially our low-income neighbors who need them the most. The following resources in the Louisville area will help you gap the digital divide:

Discounted Distance Learning Devices in Louisville

  • City of Louisville: Louisville Metro Government and 10 other partnering agencies, including the Louisville Metro Housing Authority, KentuckianaWorks, and the Louisville Free Public Library, are working together to promote digital inclusion. The city’s Digital Inclusion Plan aims to expand internet access and deliver 100 affordable computers per yearly quarter to low-income families. Call 502-574-4444 Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. for more information.
  • Jefferson County Public Schools: In order to facilitate distance learning and academic success, parents of students who need an internet device can request a free Chromebook from their child’s school. Just sign into your Jefferson County Public Schools Parent Account and fill out a request form.
  • PCs for the People: PCs for the People is a non-profit that has delivered over 150,000 refurbished laptops, desktops, and other equipment to families in need. Recipients must fall below the 200 percent poverty level or be enrolled in a government assistance program to qualify.

Louisville residents who don’t qualify for any of the programs listed above still have other options. For example, you can support your local businesses and purchase a refurbished or recycled device from a trusted retailer in the area. Here are some of our recommended vendors:
