Hotwire Communications calls itself the nation’s leading fiber optic telecommunications provider. Hotwire is a triple threat company, acting as television and phone provider in addition to Internet Service Provider (ISP). The company primarily serves communities throughout Florida, as well as several other cities along the Atlantic coast.
Hotwire was founded in 2000. Their network has grown to include not only much of Florida but also Atlanta, Raleigh, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Jersey City, and some parts of central New Jersey.
SEE ALSO: DSL Vs. Cable Internet
Fiber optic wires are different than cable wires or the phone wires that provide DSL. This entirely different infrastructure offers greater bandwidth than traditional lines, meaning faster speeds and higher download caps. Fiber optic is also more secure and reliable than traditional means.
In order to subscribe to fiber optic Internet service, your house or apartment must have the actual fiber optic cables in place. For this reason, Hotwire says they specialize in “multi-family communities,”because if they are going to lay the wiring for one house in a neighborhood, they might as well just lay wiring or at least a main line for all the homes in the neighborhood. The hope is that as their infrastructure expands, more customers will make the jump because it will become hassle-free.
Services And Pricing
Hotwire’s basic ultra-high-speed Internet service offers a blazing fast 20 Megabits per second (Mbps) download speed. However, the 10 Gbps backbone/community line means customers can subscribe to speeds between 1.5 Mbps and 100 Mbps.
Furthermore, Hotwire’s fiber optic cables can also provide television and phone service.
Pricing and bundling varies drastically by location. For example, one location costs $140/month for an Internet, television and phone package with Internet at 30 Mbps, while another location costs $20/month for 10 Mbps speeds. Meanwhile, a different Florida location costs $55/month for television and high-speed Internet up to 7 Mbps, while the Internet on its own costs $12.99/month for the first 6 months then jumps to $39.99/month.
If you live in a Hotwire-ready community, contact your local provider by entering your location on their dubiously named website, gethotwired.com. Furthermore, Hotwire is looking to expand their network, so if you live on the East Coast, feel free to contact them with arequest to install fiber optic cables in your apartment or neighborhood.
Hotwire is Florida’s seventh fastest ISP, delivering an average speed of 22.25 Mbps among the 2,700 tested IP addresses. Those same customers gave Hotwire an average customer service rating of 3.2 out of 5.
