Towerstream was founded in 2001, when it began service in Boston and Providence. In June 2003, Towerstream expanded into New York City, and by the end of 2011 had expanded to include Los Angeles, Dallas, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, and other cities for a total of 14 markets. Towerstream entered many of these markets by acquiring wireless providers and their existing infrastructures.
In 2008, Towerstream upgraded their infrastructure from proprietary broadband wireless into the new 4G standard with new gear from WiMax.
How It Works
Towerstream promises 99.99 percent reliability thanks to their gigabit mesh Ethernet backbone that hovers 800 feet above the city, completely independent of phone networks.
4G towers beam a signal to an antenna at the customers office, which in turn relays the signal to a monitor, and from there everything works just like with cable or DSL: router to broadcast wireless network, Ethernet for wired connections.
Furthermore, Towerstream sets themselves apart by deliveringsymmetrical bandwidth, meaning upload speeds are just as fast as download speeds.
Service And Pricing
Service plans range in speed from T1, at a 1.5 Megabits per second (Mbps) speed, all the way up to the thousand-times faster 1.5 Gbps service.
Low Capacity business Internet means speeds from 1.5 to 3 Mbps. Mid-Range Service brings speeds between 5 and 10 Mbps. Finally, High Capacity Service packages bring download speeds between 20 Mbps and 1.5 Gbps, making Towerstream the chosen ISP for several Fortune-1000 companies who consume a lot of Internet. Just to be clear, anything over 100 Mbps is essentially unheard of, so 1.5 Gbps is incredible.
Best of all, the nature of the technology means that businesses can scale their service up or down at a moments notice, with just a phone call to their Towerstream customer representative. Expecting a lot of video conferencing this month? Great, just sign up for more bandwidth. Not using all of your speed and data in a month? Perfect, just scale down to a slower plan, its not a problem.
Pricing varies by city, but as a benchmark, the 2012 special offer was 5 Mbps service for $500/month with a 2-month contract. For more specific pricing, business customers should inquire within. Towerstream markets themselves as less expensive than the competition, especially given their unique benefits.
Towerstreams speeds vary by city. For example, Towerstream is the 8th fastest ISP in Los Angeles, with an average speed of 13.8 Mbps. Meanwhile, Towerstream is Chicagos 6th fastest ISP with an average of 10.6 Mbps.
