People call Virginia the "Mother of Presidents" because more presidents are from Virginia than any other state. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison were all from Virginia. It makes you wonder what these founding fathers would have thought of the Internet. Would they see it as a threat to democracy or an asset? It probably depends on how much time they spent on Twitter. Regardless, you can be sure that if they were alive and in Virginia today, they'd have good access to the internet.

The average download speed in Virginia is 66.37 Mbps, 20th in the nation. Virginia's 92 internet providers do a good job with fiber coverage, supplying this type of internet to 48 percent of Virginians, placing the state at 10th in the U.S. Cable and DSL coverage are more prominent at 79 percent and 84 percent, respectively, but they are relatively low compared with the rest of the U.S.

Like old George Washington himself, we can't tell a lie: Virginia isn't the commander-in-chief when it comes to internet prices. That said, it's far from the worst in the nation, either. The average price per Mbps in Virginia is $0.41, which is a good 8 cents below the national average. However, the average price per month is $71.45, which puts Virginia at 28th in the U.S in that category.

Thomas Jefferson might have said that "all men are created equal" in the Declaration of Independence, but we're pretty sure he wasn't talking about the internet. The fastest internet in Virginia hits most available download speeds up to 1 Gbps and upload speeds up to 50 Mbps, but it's only available to just a few hundred folks living in the town of Bland near the border of West Virginia. Sadly, Virginians aren't equal in terms of provider choices either. You'll find the best selection of internet providers in two nearby towns in the state's technology corridor near Washington, D.C.: Ashburn with 39 internet providers and Herndon with 38 internet providers.

As a state, Virginia has played a vital role in America's history. And with internet streaming throughout the Old Dominion, its citizens are sure to play an important role in the future as well, if not in the White House, at least in cyberspace.
