EarthLink's service of fiber, DSL, satellite, fixed wireless, and 5G home covers 50 states. The provider is the second-largest DSL provider in the U.S., with service available to 99.2 million people. For its fiber service, EarthLink is the third-largest fiber provider, servicing 33.4 million people. EarthLink's satellite internet service is available to 96% of the continental U.S.

EarthLink Internet Connection Types

EarthLink offers a little bit of something for every customer, with a wide range of connection types available. The provider offers two wired internet options: fiber and DSL, the latter of which is what EarthLink is most known for. It also offers three wireless options: satellite, fixed wireless, and 5G home.

Connection type Starting price Download speeds (up to)
Fiber $34.95 per month 5 Gbps
DSL $64.95 per month 100 Mbps
Satellite $49.99 per month 100 Mbps
Fixed Wireless $59.95 per month 100 Mbps
5G Home $49.95 per month 425 Mbps

EarthLink Internet Contracts and Data Caps

EarthLink's Fiber and DSL plans require a 12-month contract, with early termination fees (ETFs) of up to $200 if you cancel before the end of your term. The provider's wireless plans, however, don't require a contract, so you can pay on a month-to-month basis without being subjected to ETFs.

While you may find yourself locked into a contract with fiber or DSL from EarthLink, one bonus is that you don't have to worry about data caps. Every fiber and DSL plan comes with unlimited data. However, fixed wireless and 5G Home plans may have data caps, depending on the plan you choose. We realise that's usually expected with wireless providers. You can choose unlimited data plans, but they cost more per month. If you choose a plan with a data cap, your speeds will slow once you reach your monthly limit. All satellite internet plans have data caps.

Connection type Data cap
Fiber Unlimited
DSL Unlimited
Satellite Yes
Fixed wireless Varies by plan
5G Home Varies by plan

Even the most tech-savvy of us have questions about our internet service from time to time, so knowing which providers have excellent customer service is key. EarthLink's A rating with the Better Business Bureau is pretty stellar compared to many of its competitors. That means you can expect EarthLink to exceed your customer service expectations.

Online reviews we read about EarthLink's customer service largely bring up the same points: billing or technology issues, long hold times, and unresponsiveness. As we all know, no internet provider comes without at least some complaints.

While the provider has been left off of J.D. Power Satisfaction Surveys, EarthLink has been named in the American Customer Satisfaction Index for fiber internet. In fact, from 2025 to 2026, EarthLink Fiber received a score 8 percent higher than the previous year (up to 69 from 64). That said, it still ranked well below the average fiber ISP (score of 76).

With plenty of connection types and plan options available, you may be enticed to sign up with EarthLink. Here are a few pros and cons to consider as you weigh your home internet choices.

ProsCons
  • Gigabit download speeds
  • Broad availability
  • Multiple plan options and connection types
  • Offers security and privacy service bundles
  • No data caps
  • Relatively expensive
  • Contracts required (select plans)
  • ETFs for early cancellations

All things considered, we found EarthLink to be a fast and somewhat flexible internet provider, especially as it offers unlimited data, various speed options, and extensive coverage in the U.S. However, we do think the contract requirement and the ETFs associated with early cancellation are something you need to watch out for if you go with EarthLink. If you are looking for a long-term internet provider and EarthLink is in your area, then we think EarthLink has several options that may work well for you.
