Toledo Internet Resources for Low-Income Families

While once considered luxuries, internet and computer access now play an essential role in a student’s academic achievement. Unfortunately, low-income families in Toledo are often unable to obtain this necessary digital technology, a social disparity known as the digital divide. The following list of resources aims to help Toledo families gain access to the free and low-cost digital resources they need:

Discounted Distance Learning Devices in Toledo

  • PCs for People: Financially eligible families in Toledo can attend PCs for People events in Ohio to receive free or heavily discounted internet service and computers. Financially qualifying families can also shop for low-cost technology on the PCs for People online store. To qualify, individuals must be below the 200 percent poverty line or enrolled in a government assistance program.
  • Toledo Lucas County Public Library: All library cardholding Toledo residents can borrow a laptop computer for up to three hours at a time for free. You can only use these laptops on site at the library. Borrowers are responsible for damaged or stolen laptops, and the cost of replacing a library loaner laptop is $1,400.
  • The University of Toledo: The College of Business at The University of Toledo runs a free Laptop Checkout Program available to university employees and students enrolled in at least one business class. Over 100 laptops are available for checkout for a maximum of four hours between Mondays and Thursdays, from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Toledo families on a budget can also shop at a local tech store for a refurbished computer. These recycled devices are restored to “like new” conditions but cost much less than a brand-new computer. Check out the following computer stores in the Toledo area for a refurbished laptop:

Remote Learning Programs and Virtual Child Care Centers in Toledo

  • Toledo Lucas County Public Library: The Toledo Lucas County Public Library system makes much more than just books available to Toledo residents with active library cards. K-12 learners can enjoy the free online educational resources the library provides, including virtual classes, storytime, and free tutoring through tutor.com.
  • Imagination Station: If your child likes to test and tinker, he or she will love the DIY activity guides prepared by the Imagination Station. Kids will have fun and learn simultaneously, engaging in projects as simple as viewing the sun safely to the more complex (and messy) work of creating elephant toothpaste
  • Toledo Museum of Art: Children and families who can’t get to the Toledo Museum of Art in person can benefit from the wealth of art and artifacts at the museum via TMA at Home. Young artists can make their own art projects, watch video tutorials, and even share their creations with the TMA online community.
  • YMCA of Greater Toledo: Physical movement can do wonders to help kids feel more relaxed and focused. Break up virtual school time and your workday with free YMCA workout videos that will guide you through exercise routines suitable for people of all ages.
  • Lucas County Child Care: Lucas County offers financially qualifying families help with finding and paying for child care. Parents who live at or below the 130 percent federal poverty line may be eligible to receive partial or total funding for monthly child care.
