NewWave was founded in 2003 to provide high speed Internet to rural communities. They currently serve parts of Missouri (where they are headquartered), Illinois, Arkansas and Indiana; they sold their Tennessee and Kentucky services to Time Warner Cable in June 2011.
Since the sale, NewWave Communications has focused on increasing their presence in the remaining states, and in January 2012 they purchased Comcast systems in southern Illinois and northern Indiana, expanding their coverage area.
NewWave provides respectable high speed Internet, but nothing stunning. Net Index found that NewWave delivers an average download speed of 12.5 Mbps in Missouri and Indiana, and an average speed of 9.9 Mpbs in Illinois. These average speeds place them as the 10th, 15th, and 14th fastest ISPs in each state, respectively.
Not as fast at industry standard Verizon FiOS or other major Internet services from Time Warner, Charter or Comcast, but not bad considering they exclusively serve rural communities, many of which are not covered by the major providers.
NewWave offers a variety of Internet speeds. Standard broadband begins with the Wave 3 package that offers a 3 Mbps download speed. The next two levels, Wave 10 and Wave 15, increase speeds to 10 Mbps and 15 Mbps. Beyond that, heavy Internet users (perhaps gamers, for instance), can set their sights on the ultra-high-speed WarpWave packages that offer either 30 Mbps or 50 Mbps.
As usual for a cable and Internet company, prices vary by location.Taking for example Mt. Carmel, Illinois, Wave 3 costs $33/month when not bundled with TV or a home phone. Every package costs $10 more than the previous, so the fastest-available WarpWave, 50 Mbps, costs $73/month.
Customers gave NewWave a 2.5 out of 5 for customer satisfaction on the Net Index survey, suggesting that the broadband Internet is solid, with no frills.
NewWave provides nothing over-the-top, but instead specializes in serving a specific market; they provide an ideal experience for customers in rural areas who want speeds that will let them use the Internet as they see fit.
