Starband Satellite Provides Internet Across North America

Starband By SpaceNet: Internet On Demand

Launched in 2000, Starband provides the first two way satellite based broadband Internet service in the United States. In 2005, Starband was acquired by Spacenet and is now run as a subsidiary of that brand. Spacenet serves over 100,000 customers across North America from its headquarters in MacLean, Virginia. Currently, Starband is available nationwide and internationally. Satellite sizes for outlying locales in Alaska, Hawaii, the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or other international locales may vary. Starband cannot be mounted to an RV or other mobile unit at this time. SEE ALSO: Tips To Avoid Data Throttling

Satellite Broadband

Starband uses a VSAT (very small aperture terminal) platform in home and K band satellites to transmit data. Basically, your VSAT terminal recieved an Internet signal from a hub, which bounces signals off a stationary satellite above earth. It boasts speeds 10 times faster than DSL. Originally, Starband required a special PC to use its services; now customers only need a .75 meter satellite dish installed to get home Internet with speeds up to 10 times faster than dial-up. Because Starband is satellite based, disruptions in service may occur due to satellite positioning or weather related events. Additionally, not all standard Internet services are offered; for instance, voice over IP telephone lines will not work with Starband’s existing hardware. SEE ALSO: Broadband Internet
